The Shroom Issue LXXXIX Part 5
Original post? See past 4 Shroom posts.
Hi, welcome to second issue since the resurrection of The 'Shroom, Mario Kart: Wheel Tips Corner! . In this month, we'll purely cover Mario Kart 8 related stuff, seeing that it has been released for a while and now more is actually known about the game. So, I'll review a popular Mario Kart 8 kart, that both will give you the advantage will speeding in style. I'll review a yet another MK8 course, and I'll also give a review on a character. But wait, here's a bonus: I'll review a set of tires. Cool, huh? What do mean no? Just keep reading.
Kart
This time, I'll give you multiple kart parts to deal with, so pick whatever here suits your play style and make a combo with it. Use your imagination!
The Biddybuggy, known as the Bugbuggy in other regions, is a default kart in Mario Kart 8, and the best kart in the business for accelerationaries. (That's a new word.) Although usually used and and associated with the babies, it can be used and combined with any racer, with lots different colours and possibilities for great combos. It is great for both the good and not-so-good, easily able to get back to full speed after a crash or the infamous first place hater.
Pros
Tires
The Crimson Slim wheels are a set of wheels obtainable in Mario Kart 8 and are basically the exact same as the Slim, except red. These, of course, makes them instantly cooler. Or maybe not. Either way, the actual statistics of the wheels are pretty good for racers who want speed without draining their other qualities. It also gives some good handling, which is actually rare for speedy karts. The looks of it are the main difference, though, where it has red rubber with mustard on the previous red parts. Looks like a hot dog with heaps of Ketchup. Which, of course, is why it looks great on the giant racing shoe.
Pros
Course
This time, I'll review a new course from Mario Kart 8, that, strangely, only has one word in its name, the Electrodrome. It's a fun, neon like place that's full of Stereo Speaker sets, Jumbletrons and a giant Disco Ball. Overall, it's like a combination of Neo Bowser (Koopa) City and Music Park (one of which, interestingly, is also the third race in the Star Cup). This, of course, makes it a pretty fun course to drive on, and also means that the music will be good too. The anti-gravity and gliding features are also used nicely, making it a great course for testing out Mario Kart 8's new features and controls.
Character
This Month, it would have to be King Boo. He's a giant floating marshmallow that somehow rides a kart. I wouldn't exactly call his color scheme very evil, but hey, it never stopped this guy. He has appeared in most games since Double Dash, along with a mini version of Bowser, a monkey wearing a cap, and a gender confused Yoshi.Over those three, he is the only one who has been and remained a heavy rider. Great for people who think karts are dumb and instead just hovers over one, which doesn't make sense. Overall, King Boo is a great example of Nintendo logic and heavy shadows.
And that ends the road of this month. See you next month with more info and kart combos to try. Always remember to carry the saviour against any blue death bombs!
Hello, readers! I'm your co-Spotlight manager and co-Pipe Plaza Director, Yoshi876. Welcome to Retro Feature, a section in which I delve deep into the archives to bring you the best blasts from the past. This time I bring you our current director’s, Superchao (Talk), first ever section!
Superchao joined the MarioWiki on 16th December 2006. Superchao made his ‘Shroom debut during Issue 3 in the Fun Section (now known today as Fun Stuff). He wrote the first ever Quiz section, a section that is still in use in today’s paper, he would go on to write this a further two times before stopping. Later on he would go onto to become the Director for Fun Stuff, however, his time here was short and he only spent three issues with the reins, before he was swapped out with Smasher (Talk). All was not lost though, he then became the Activities Manager before becoming the Director we all know today. In other ‘Shroom ventures, Superchao contributed an Anniversary Announcement for Pipe Plaza in Issue LXXV, but most notably he hosts the Interview, a section he has been doing since Issue LXX. In this section Superchao interviews a noteworthy member of the community, he has won Section of the Month with it four times.
However, you’re not here to learn about the history of Superchao, you’re here to a view a classic section from issues gone by, so without further ado here is Superchao’s first ever section, the Quiz from Issue III.
Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you next month for another trip back in time.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the new article for The 'Shroom: Beyond 120 Stars. Megadardery is here with mind-blowing challenges and more for his favorite game.
Ever thought that Super Mario 64 was too easy, or something? Ever thought that you don't want to play the same missions over, and over? Ever thought that you were too good for this game, but still don't know what else can you do? In this -overly useless- article, you will find -overly useless- challenges that you may enjoy, if you are a hard-core lover of SM64. You may also find some shortcuts that can be useful in speed-runs, or whatever. If you think you are an advanced player, try one of the challenges that is labeled as Very Hard!
*insert more introduction here*
Without further ado, let's-a-go.
Medium : As for our medium challenge, you know that Chain Chomp in Bob-omb Battlefield, correct? He is guarding a Red Coin, and five regular coins (which you can get by running around his post) To clear this challenge, you must simply get all his coins, without losing health.
Hard : If you are wondering what could be the hard challenge, then you are on the line, beat Koopa The Slow in Bob-omb battlefield, the catch is to wait one entire minute before starting racing him. Do not use the Wing Cap or the cannons; it ruins the fun.
Very Hard : For the very hard challenge, you will need some flying skills, you may also need some planning, so whatever. You know the very easy red coin star in Lethal Lava Land, ok? the goal is to get them... yay! not really, you need to collect them all, along with the star in one flight using the Wing Cap. *gasp* It is not as easy as you may guess. It is very hard, it becomes hard, once you know how. Also know it is a one-shot, miss one and you will probably have to start over.
Alright, now go turn on your N64 (or Virtual Console, you get my point..), and go try those challenges. Try hard, don't give up easily..
The shortcut of the month is in Cool, Cool Mountain. You know that -always missing- baby penguin in the course, right? One of the most boring missions... get the penguin, slide down till the snowman, continue on the narrow bridge with the two annoying snowmans, drop down for the mother. Not anymore, you just need to carry the penguin jump near the broken bridge, you will fall on a slope, carefully slide to under the bridge with the two snowmans, and slide on that slope, once that slope is over, you will ricochet for some reasons over the gap, and reach the mother in less than five seconds. Really, you don't need to press A at all. Actually, you will need to press it to advance the speech with the mom and get the star.
Hello, Shroom readers! I spent a whole lot of time putting together the awards, so I haven't really been able to focus on the 'Shroom. Next month is our Awards Special Issue, which will feature quite a bit of stuff related to the ceremony. See you then!

Pros
- Awesome Acceleration
- Great Handling, which can avoid any collisions, items or even help those who don't use drifting.
- Bad Traction
- Horrible Speed
- Lighter Weight
Tires
The Crimson Slim wheels are a set of wheels obtainable in Mario Kart 8 and are basically the exact same as the Slim, except red. These, of course, makes them instantly cooler. Or maybe not. Pros
- Good Speed
- Nice Handling, which helps speed.
- Bad Acceleration
- Horrible Traction

- Tip 1: Take care when drifting. The anti-gravity can throw you out, so learn the corners by heart.
- Tip 2: Take the path that suits you. Even if one does actually have a better time on it, if your better with one, stick to that path.
- Tip 3: Make use of the gimmicks and use your opponents for spin boosts. In multiplayer Grand Prix, try to bump each other often on the anti-grav.

[show] Spoilers!: Tips | |
---|---|
Easy | You can stand on the pillars in Princess Peach's by several ways, the easiest way, is to stand on the second-to-last pillar before the finish line, it is lower than the rest. |
Medium | The Chain Chomp stops for sometime before attacking again, he also doesn't attack if he can't see you.. That's your chance! when you are behind him, quickly run around the post.. After the coins are spawned, quickly run away. And return to collect all the coins at once. |
Hard | Koopa The Quick reaches the finish line in around 1 minute and 30 seconds, you can get to the finish line under thirty seconds several ways, but the easiest way is to rush to the white slope, hold A and walk up the slope pressing B repeatedly to climb-kick the slope. Then, run to the alcove to teleport up the mountain, Side Somersault to the top of the mountain, and then rush to the flag line, The Slow will be about to get to the flagpole.. Remember, you need to Long Jump several times to be fast enough to beat him. |
Very Hard | The most helpful tip if you cannot get the very hard challenge is simply stand on the fence by the rolling log (you can, either fly to the fence and ground pound on it. Or Side Somersault from near the rolling log star and wall kick, hold left on the control stick and grab the fence, then pull yourself. With the wing cap, triple jump and fly carefully to get the coins. Getting the coins can be tricky, the easiest way is to get the middle three coins, turn right and back (get some coins if you like, but that may be hard, so skip it), turn right again and get the three coins away from the Star Marker, turn right and get the last two coin along with the star. |
- Featured Shortcut
The shortcut of the month is in Cool, Cool Mountain. You know that -always missing- baby penguin in the course, right? Bloo’s Review Bloo52 (Talk)Hello everyone, Bloo52 here with Bloo's Reviews. The game I will be reviewing today is Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U. I got this game as an early birthday present the day after it came out, and besides Mario Kart DS, it is the only Mario Kart I own. Now, let the review commence!Since this is a Mario Kart game, there isn't really a plot since the game focuses on gameplay. There are five game modes in all, Grand Prix, Time Trials, VS Race, Battle, and Online. In Grand Prix, you race in one cup (composed of four race tracks) and try to win all the races and get the trophy. In Time Trials, you can either try to see how fast you can complete a course or race against a staff ghost and try to beat their time. In Vs race, You set perimeters for the races (like teams, engine class, item selection, etc) and then race. In Battle mode, you do balloon battles on certain courses (more on that later). And in Online mode, you race online. The gameplay is very simple for GP, TT, VS, And Online, you just race, but Battle mode is a little different. In Battle mode, you get three balloons and you have to pop other peoples balloons using items such as the green shell or the mushroom. The difference this time around is that instead of fighting on battle courses designed for battle mode, you fight on unedited racing tracks like Dry Dry Desert or Moo Moo Meadows. I don't think this was a good idea because in the old Mario Kart games, it was easy to find someone to take balloons from, but now you have to drive around a giant course to find people to fight. Sometimes, they can even hide in shortcuts or behind a ramp. This isn't a big issue for me since I never played battle mode in the other Mario Kart games anyway, but i can see how this fact could make a lot of people mad. I apologize if I'm not going too much in depth with the game modes, but there is a lot to talk about in this game. The racing courses are split into two categories Nitro (new) courses and Retro (returning) courses. Each type of course has four cups of it's type, so there are four retro cups and four nitro cups, with four races per cup. That means there are 32 races in all, 16 per type of course. The new courses are fun to play on for the most part and they all use the zero gravity mechanic well, as well as gliding which returns from Mario Kart 7. The retro courses are courses from previous Mario Kart titles that have been revamped to work with the new mechanics in Mario Kart 8. The courses all have a certain theme like Mount Wario is reminiscent of a ski course and Electrodrome has a nightclub theme going on with the techno music playing and the Koopa Troop dance party shown on the monitors throughout the course. The game controls great, steering feels precise and the cars and bikes control as they should. Personally, I didn't like the ATVs very much because they turn slowly and they have poor speed, but that may just be due to the characters and vehicle parts I chose when I used them. The graphics are bright, colorful, and in HD. Everything has a unique texture from the serene water in Toad Harbor to the glaring lightning in Cloudtop Cruise. This game may be one of the best looking Wii U games of the year! The racing is still the fun, fast-paced action you would expect from a Mario Kart game. The items are back and are still satisfying to use on other racers. My personal favorite is the new super horn which emits a shockwave that makes other racers spin out and destroys red, green, and even BLUE shells. It doesn't come up very often though, so use it wisely! Speaking of coming up often, the item rotation in this game is improved from the other Mario Kart games. Items like the blue shell and the bullet bill don't come up as often as they used to, but I think lightning has become more common than the other powerful items (which is a pain for courses with big jumps like Royal Raceway or Sunshine Airport). There are many things to do after you unlock all of the tracks. You can complete the time trials for stamps, you can unlock vehicle parts by collecting coins during races, and you can collect stamps of the characters by finishing a grand prix with that character (i.e you finish a grand prix with mario, you get a mario stamp). You can also race or battle against others online and try to score the most points. The online mode rarely has slowdown issues, so don't worry about any lag while you race. In my opinion, Mario Kart 8 is an amazing game. I really enjoyed the tracks that employed zero-gravity and hang gliding (Toad Harbor and the N64 Rainbow Road are my favorite courses). The music is outstanding, especially in Dolphin Shoals. I really like the new jazzy nintendo tracks and I hope they keep doing some songs in this style. The only complaints I have with this game are the ATVs having poor control and the brand new battle mode, but those complaints are very minor, since you never have to do battle mode or control an ATV. This game gets a 10/10 score and, once again, if numbers aren't your forte(or if you don't want to be reminded of math class next month), you should buy this game. See you guys next month with another review! |

Director's Notes (FunkyK38 (Talk))
Greetings, all! Nothing to say this month, it’s been pretty quiet around here. Do check out all the great sections we’ve got this month! What’s on The Box? (Yoshi876 (Talk))
Hello readers, and welcome to another edition of What’s on the Box? This month’s edition is the Spanish and Portuguese boxart for New Super Luigi U.In the boxart you can see Luigi riding a Yoshi, Blue Toad, Yellow Toad, Nabbit, a Red Shell, a Piranha Plant and a Balloon Baby Yoshi. As the game was released as part of the Year of Luigi it has Luigi facing the player, possibly to indicate that this is his game and he is welcoming you to it. Another interesting thing to note is that the Toads on the boxart are in the same poses as they are in the New Super Mario Bros. U boxart, with the only change being that Blue Toad is now holding a Red Shell. Another main difference from the New Super Mario Bros. U boxart is that this one takes place in Soda Jungle instead of Acorn Plains, probably to show that due to the 100-second time limit in courses that you’ll be completely the game much quicker than the other one; it could also be because as the outer casing is green and Soda Jungle is a jungle which would be full of green trees and the like.Ongoing Fan Projects (Yoshi876 (Talk))

Featured Sprite (FunkyK38 (Talk))
Hello, readers! I don’t know about most of you, but I’m getting ready to head back to school right now- and that’s something I’m not exactly looking forward to! So this month as I was browsing for this month’s sprite, I found this creepy guy from Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time: A skellokey! I remember the enemies in Bowser’s Inside Story that looked like this guy, but they were made of teeth, I believe. And they weren’t nearly as creepy looking, either!Co-Director's Notes (Paper Yoshi (Talk))Well, hello everyone, and welcome to the August Issue of Pipe Plaza. Yoshi876 and I don't have anything new to report to you regarding the Sub-Team as a whole, although I do have some news of my own to share with you guys. After leaving my position as Mario Calendar writer, I started thinking about my future in the paper, and when I would leave the last three positions I currently hold here: Monthly Report writer, Pipe Plaza Co-Director and Upcoming Games writer (that's still me, even though I've been on hiatus for quite some time). As I told Yoshi876 and the rest of the Core Staff (and I'm using basically the same words here), I originally intended to leave all my positions this month. However, about one hour after deciding that way, I slightly tweaked my decision. Regarding my writing positions, I will still leave them both after this issue is released, but I'll try to write some sort of special Upcoming Games section by the end of the year, as it's a very special section for me, the first one I ever wrote for The 'Shroom back in January 2011, as a matter of fact. One the other hand, regarding my directing position here in the Pipe Plaza, I ultimately decided to leave it next month, as that'll mark my 30th month as Pipe Plaza (Co-)Director, and we can all agree that that's a pretty number, and thus the perfect occasion to leave the team, right? I'll have the opportunity to write these notes one more time, so I'll have plenty to say then. Anyway, before wrapping up, I would like to thank everyone who voted for Upcoming Games and Monthly Report during the time I wrote those sections, helping them reach the Top Three 12 times each, with 9 wins for Upcoming Games and a single win for Monthly Report. Hopefully, when things start to look better for me, I will be back to write those two sections once again... And that's all for now, folks. I will have one final opportunity to write those notes, so I'll have plenty to talk about then. See you around! Section of the Month (Paper Yoshi (Talk))Wait, that's not it, guys! I still have to deliver the Section of the Month results (you'd guess that by the header, right?), so I'll be quick about it, as I'm running late with a legal petition from my internship here.Last month's poll got only 9 votes, so, as I've told you countless times, please be sure to vote for your favorite section in all future polls!! The Sections of the Month for July's Special Issue are... Featured and Tip of the Month, for the third and fourth time ever, respectively, with 4 votes each!!!! The third-placed section was Monthly Report, with a single vote. So, congratulations to the winners, Yoshi876 (Talk) and FunkyK38 (Talk)!! Well done, guy and girl!! Monthly Report (Paper Yoshi (Talk))Hello, dear readers, and welcome to my last issue as Monthly Report writer. As I have just said in my notes, I will leave it this month. So, for the last time, let's check the wiki statistics from May, June and July, along with comparisons between those sets of stats.(Credit goes to Stooben Rooben (Talk) and Super Mario Bros. (Talk) for the table coding. Stooben originally created it when writing this section back in Issues XXIII, XXV and XXVI, and SMB based his coding for Issues XXXIX, XL and XLI – which I am using in this issue – off of Stooben's coding.)
Community Report (Driftmaster130 (Talk))Hey folks, this is Driftmaster130, with the August edition of Community Report. Since I wasToa 95 (Talk) was promoted from Patroller to Sysop in July, great job and congratulations. Other than that, there were no other major changes in wiki policy. Featured (Yoshi876 (Talk))Hello, Shroom readers. I can tell your Summer holidays (if you're on them) aren't going well. How you ask? Simple, instead of soaking up the rays you're in here reading about the Featured Articles. However, they are very interesting so I'll let you off.Featured ArticlesNo new articles have been featured in the past month.Re-Featured ArticlesOne new article has become re-featured.
FA NominationsThere are four ongoing Featured Article Nominations.
Failed FA NominationsNo new articles have failed the featuring process.Unfeatured ArticlesTwo new articles have become unfeatured.

Failed Unfeaturing NominationsOne new article has failed the unfeaturing process.
Thanks for reading see you next month, for more Featured Articles news. Tip of the Month (FunkyK38 (Talk))Ever seen the commercial that says, "They can't put anything on the internet that isn't true!"? Well, that statement is clearly false, but don't forget: Not everything you read on the internet is a lie. If you're unsure about something in an article, ask someone else for help. It's better to get a clarification from another person than to tick someone else off by deleting something that they wrote that's actually true. |
The Shroom Issue LXXXIX Fun Stuff
The original post is here.
Director's Notes (Super Mario Bros. (Talk))
Hello everybody, welcome to this August edition! We have a smaller Fun Stuff this month, mostly due to busyness with the Awards and also because I was out of town and unable to properly coordinate a larger section this time around. Next month I believe we plan on having a Special Issue dedicated to the Awards, so we will have a much bigger, better Fun Stuff with some special features as well! Be sure not to miss it! Here are the results for Fun Stuff's Section of the Month for July 2014. I would like to thank those that voted last month, and be sure to vote again this month!Place | Section | Votes | Percentage |
