Hello everybody, welcome to this August edition! We have a smaller Fun Stuff this month, mostly due to busyness with the Awards and also because I was out of town and unable to properly coordinate a larger section this time around. Next month I believe we plan on having a Special Issue dedicated to the Awards, so we will have a much bigger, better Fun Stuff with some special features as well! Be sure not to miss it! Here are the results for Fun Stuff's Section of the Month for July 2014. I would like to thank those that voted last month, and be sure to vote again this month!
Can I just say as a famous war hero and award winning newspaper columnist how happy I am as a society that we have gotten past giving video game mascots "hip attitudes" in order to make them more popular with a generation of kids who never existed. Now what was I doing again…OH YEAH Did you know?
- That the Goomba King was originally a regular Goomba turned into a king by Bowser using the Star Rod?
- That the Pikmin series was inspired by a tech demo called Super Mario 128?
- That in Super Mario RPG, an unused enemy called Drill Bit actually makes a brief appearance in the game and is actually listed as a boss in the player’s guide?

- ...knows how to juggle.
- ...also knows how to play guitar.
- ...may not be the strongest, but is quick and agile.

If you guessed Diddy Kong, then you are correct! Diddy Kong first debuted in the 1994 video game Donkey Kong Country as Donkey Kong's sidekick and was originally supposed to be Donkey Kong Jr.'s redesign. He later went on to save Donkey Kong in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest alongside his girlfriend Dixie Kong and also saved his world from the evil racer Wizpig in Diddy Kong Racing and Diddy Kong Racing DS. Though Donkey Kong is much stronger than Diddy, the little guy makes up for it with his speed, nimbleness and ability to shoot his Peanut Popgun. He juggles when left idle in Donkey Kong Country 2 and plays guitar in Donkey Kong 64 as well. His latest appearance was in Mario Golf: World Tour released in 2014. |
I will present ten hints about a particular video game, and it is up to you to guess which one I am talking about! Let the guessing begin!
This game...
- ...was originally in development for the Nintendo 64DD.
- ...was supposed to be a sequel to another game, but became its own independent title.
- ...features Bowser as the first and last boss battled.
- ...was going to feature Poochy and Nep-Enut in some fashion, but both were scrapped in early development.
- ...has Mario being accompanied by several helpers.
- ...received several sequels in the years that followed.
- ...was released later in the Nintendo 64's lifespan.
- ...introduced a unique battle system for a Mario game.
- ...is novel.
